[PRIMAVERA 2017] Full Line-up

Almost two hundred names bear testimony to Primavera Sound's special commitment to this, the seventeenth edition of its Barcelona festival. The central days of the event will be Wednesday 31st May through Sunday 4th June 2017 on its two main sites. The Parc del Fòrum site will, as usual, host the largest part of the programme whilst the Raval neighbourhood will once again be the headquarters of the increasingly attractive free programme in the centre of the city.

A daring line-up bearing the inimitable stamp of Primavera Sound that is the very essence of the contemporary scene and which at the same time consolidates the festival as an international cultural reference and reinforces its inescapable commitment to the history of contemporary music.

The visionary and exceptionally renowned artist Frank Ocean, the British band The xx with their recently released album under their belt, Bon Iver thrashing out the tracks of his most recent LP "22, A Million", the electronic magic of Aphex Twin, the Canadian band fronted by Win Butler and Régine Chassagne Arcade Fire, the masters of extreme metal Slayer, the great icon Grace Jones, the star of R&B Solange and the mythical Northern Irish artist Van Morrison are the most outstanding names in a high-profile line-up.

The historical punk rock band Descendents, two concerts by Stephen Merritt leading The Magnetic Fields, the stage comeback of the soul punk from the American band The Make-Up, electronic pop by the british band Metronomy, the idol of new soul Miguel, ground-breaking urban music from Skepta, the return of Teenage Fanclub and their arsenal of perfect pop, experimental electronic music by Flying Lotus, Death Grips' raging intensity, indie rock from Grandaddy who are back, pioneering hip hop by Run The Jewels, the pop slacker Mac DeMarco, the reunion of the Canadian band Broken Social Scene and the author of one of the records of the year Angel Olsen are among the other principle draws of this edition.

Electronic music continues to gain ground thanks to the expansion of the Beach Club area now with two stages exclusively dedicated to this genre. The list of artists is particularly extensive and includes the popular German DJ Dixon, the British duo Bicep with their overwhelming live act, melodic techno from Recondite, innovative house by me, Tycho's nod towards pop, John Talabot and Axel Boman on board Talaboman, Wolfgang Voigt's influential project Gas, the renovator of UK bass Joy Orbison, the impressive live show by the Bulgarian artist KiNK, the class and experience of Michael Mayer, the duo formed by Lauer and Gerd Janson under the name Tuff City Kids and the eclecticism of the Italian Dj Tennis. The Belgium band Front 242 deserve a special mention as essential to understanding the evolution of dance music in the last few decades.

Guitars have always played a very important role in the line-up. And on this occasion they go from the psychedelia of Australian bands such as Pond and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and the Americans The Black Angels to the punk by Against Me! and Priests, metal by Sleep, the French band Gojira and the kings of metalcore Converge. The classic visit from the trio Shellac, the murky sound of the reformed Royal Trux and the classical rock imbued with soul by The Afghan Whigs and the veteran punk band The Damned who are just some of the other attractions in this section.

The exceptional event will be full of very special concerts and bands that are out of the ordinary, an integral quality of the house brand. From Elza Soares, first-lady of Brazilian music, to the revisiting of their greatest album "Odessey & Oracle" on the occasion of its 50th anniversary by the 60s cult band The Zombies. From the avant garde pioneer Annette Peacock to the celebration of the legacy of the seminal band This Heat with the project This Is Not This Heat, passing through the Nigerian artist King Sunny Adé, maestro of the genre jùjú. The concert by Seu Jorge singing songs by David Bowie that he covered for "The Life Aquatic" soundtrack promises to be a unique moment, as does the presence of Junun, the project backed by Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead) and Shye Ben Tzur that delves into the traditional musics from the north of India accompanied by the Rajasthan Express.

One of the inherent qualities of Primavera Sound is the consideration of emerging artists and the constant search for new proposals, which form the basis of the powerful line-ups of the festival. A role that will be fulfilled at the next edition by the free jazz by BADBADNOTGOOD, the first LP by British artist Sampha after innumerable collaborations, pop textures by Glass Animals, Joey Purp and his hip hop made in Chicago, Alexandra Savoir, the American artist backed by Alex Turner, the dark and twisted universe of King Krule, Whitney's classic rock, folk from the Californian artist Weyes Blood and the Australian Julia Jacklin, the new adventures of Hamilton Leithauser, lead singer of The Walkmen, and country pop by Nikki Lane.

In the national section the release of Mishima's new album, the innovative hip hop by the Madrid band Agorazein, the young band Belako with their post punk for the masses, the celebration of the 20th anniversary of "Hecho Es Simple", the debut album of the Barcelona band 7 Notas 7 Colores, the expansive shoegaze of Triángulo de Amor Bizarro, the unclassifiable rock by the Basque institution Berri Txarrak, the new promising flamenco artist Rosalía with Raül Refree, the meeting between Kepa Junkera and Los Hermanos Cubero, the rising star Soledad Vélez and bands to keep an eye on such as Museless and Melange all stand out.

An exceptional line-up from which some names are still missing such as the artists that will make up the always singular and exclusive programme of the Hidden Stage, with which Heineken continues its backing of the festival thus consolidating its leadership in the area of music sponsorship.
